Bunker Working Bee

On Sunday 19 September the Mallacoota and District Historical Society held a Working Bee at the Bunker with an emphasis on setting up the Bush Walking Trail.  This was the 4th attempt: the previous 3 had all been locked down.

Here are some folk doing some weeding (ie thinning out the regrowth so the specimens being planted have a chance of a becoming established and being visible) and site clearing.

While so engaged "I heard a disturbing sound". Just thought I'd throw in a James Brown quote (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbq0OuJtErs. The clip is excellent but goes for 6 minutes: and the quotes referenced are about 1 minute in.)
What I heard was not - to continue the quote - "the jingle jangle of a thousand lost souls" but the distinctive feeding chatter of a pair of Glossy Black-Cockatoos. Very pleasing to know there are still some in the area and they have found some appropriately aged Allocasuarina cones to feed on!

First the male
Then the female.
This shows the sort f beak you need to feed on these cones.
Some Glossodia major (waxlip orchid) were visible.
As was a single Caladenia carnea (pink fingers).  I think the shape of the labellum (and the time of flowering) rules out C. fuscata.

Afterwards we had a good barbecue!
Birds don't have to be rare to make a nice photo.  A Welcome Swallow perched on the flagpole.
