This species has been splut from Gull-billed Tern. It is very uncommon in East Gippsland but a small group of them have turned up and hung around for at last the last 3 days.
2 very distant (~300m) images from Monday 15th on the sandbars past Captain Stevensons Point. First is an adult.
Then an immature. On Tuesday 16th Rob Clay got distant views on sandbars off the Northern end of Goat Island. I didn't get an image of any sort.
On Wednesday 17th Robert Wright saw the birds from Captain Stevenson's Point and then from the Wharf area. I took myself off to the Wharf and as soon as I got there one of the Terns flew by and made a few passes at potential prey.
It then settled down on a sandbar between the Wharf and Seagull Island. Not a classy photograph but IMO it does the job.
A second adult Tern arrived and also rested on the sandbar.
