Marine Mammals at Bastion

A post to the Mallacoota Community page on the morning of 7 August reported seeing 3 -5 whales heading North and expressed some surprise at this late sighting.

We got there about 2 hours later and saw no sign of whales,  However there was a very large seal floating around off shore (and when we came back to the lookout an hour later a fair sized pod of dolphins were in much the same area.

The big excitement - for us any way -  was a seal pup hauled out on the beach.  It seemed determined to catch up on its sleep and expressed its displeasure rather loudly each time a wave wetted its botty.  Here are some photos (big zoom - I didn't get very close. not that it seemed at all fussed about us being there).

  1. It had gone the next afternoon, suggesting that Mum had just parked it on the beach while she went to feed offshore. We did add to the mammal list with at least 2 Humpback Whales offshore.
